What Is Web3 Ethos To You?

TL;DR

Highlights

[10:16] Transparency as the on-ramp. Soup opened with the value that got him into his first real community — the plague — after hearing Pons on a space literally walk through how much money they had and what they were doing with it. Not a balance sheet, but close enough to stick with him years later. He came back to it at [23:25] to explain why: it's the thing that makes holders feel like participants rather than customers.

[18:08] Burningbush, day-to-day type of guy. Fresh off a night he claims total amnesia about, Burningbush announced he was "quietly cooking," then delivered a solemn statement of principle about not remembering the trespasses others have made against him. Soup's one-word review: "Lies." [18:26]

[18:54] Jed's opening salvo. After a detour into licensing the group's new soundboard ("nobody should use it"), Jed swung straight into the topic: access to founders, building alongside the community, returning value, breaking things, being early to tech because you were already here. Soup's response: "Damn, bro came swinging."

[26:10] Lyss on permission. The longest uninterrupted stretch of the night, and the one that set the tone: you don't need a role or a title to add value, if something's missing you can just go fill the void, and reputation in web3 is built out of hundreds of small moments rather than one big one. She distinguished "build a community" from "start a project" and closed on a room full of beautiful PFPs she wouldn't trade. Sho followed with the perfect capper at [31:03] — all of that from someone four wisdom teeth down, so what's everyone else's excuse for not requesting the mic?

[36:44] Sho revisits 2021. Sho admitted that a comment from Burningbush and Jed the night before had actually landed: her 2021 was miserable not because the era was bad but because she wasn't with the right people. Her practical takeaway — some rooms aren't for you, find the ones that are, and don't be a drain on the ones you're in.

[39:25] Selling a pillow to someone who's never heard of a wallet. Jed asked the hard commercial question: who outside web3 buys an LT3 Fugs pillow? Soup's answer ran long and specific — a real photoshoot, paid ads, and above all the email and SMS list they've barely touched, citing VeeFriends as the model for how a web2-heavy audience gets pulled toward Discord rather than the other way around [40:23].

[47:11] The church answer and the real one. Burningbush started with self-sovereignty and verifiable ownership, then audibly dropped the polish: the ethos is tearing down what came before, breaking it, rebuilding, breaking it again. His sharpest point — projects chasing a web2 exit have it backwards. "We don't need to build time machines to go back in time." He also noted that complacency and boredom are disqualifying: if you're "building" and nothing is failing, you aren't building.

[51:03] Jed on where the next users actually come from. Rather than courting web2, Jed wants the ~90% of crypto people who never touch NFTs — a risk asset audience already primed for a risk asset. He tied that to Robinhood rails and loyalty rewards, predicted at [58:13] that every IP project adopts some version of on-chain loyalty within a year or two, and drew a line at vocabulary: he's not swapping "NFT" for anything softer.

[1:02:02] Lyss on gatekeeping language and doing the homework. She flagged that the phrase "higher-level founder" makes her cringe — the top founders in the space are just people having dinner — and then made her actual ask of the community: you don't have to put a dollar into the new tech, but choosing to know nothing about it is a decision, and it's a twenty-minute one to reverse.

[1:12:17] Dan runs the tape back to the genesis block. Dan connected the 2009 message encoded in Bitcoin's first block to where the room sits now, calling the present moment "hyper iteration" driven by AI, and arguing the next evolution of the ethos is hospitality — being ready to welcome the wave of new people when a mass-accessible platform finally connects. Quakk followed at [1:17:04] with the underrated angle: nowhere else do you get to just hang out with the creators, using Claynosaurz as the example, and comparing it to a Disney kid getting to talk to the people who made The Lion King.

[1:26:46] SLICK RIC closes the loop. "Did somebody say cook?" Ric's answer needed no framework: we are the ethos, everyone decides what they do with their time, and the only real move is to keep gathering knowledge and hand it to your friends so they get ahead with you.
