🎯🔫 Quirkies Sniper Sunday: "We Didn't Actually Lose One of Them"
Host: Quirkies (@quirkiesnft) with cohosts Papii (@RealPapii) and CoJo (@CoJ04) · Mon, Sep 28 2026 · 1:11:40 · ~7 speakers
TL;DR
- The whole Space was a debrief on the weekend's marketplace-wide drain. Papii froze 135 Quirkies mid-theft using a "suspend" function he'd asked his dev to build a few weeks earlier and had never once used.
- Between 0xQuit's white-hat rescue and OpenSea flagging the rest, roughly 1,500 Quirkies/Quirklings/Inks came out the other side — with, per Papii, not a single one permanently lost. Of 284 recovered assets, 161 are already returned, 123 left [5:35].
- Next step: Papii is working with Quit to route the frozen NFTs back to rightful owners, ideally through the existing "NFTs Are Safe" claim flow rather than a separate site [59:33].
- Tim from Rare Apepes (@RareApepesNFT) came up to compare notes on upgradable ERC-721C contracts, Unvault, and what small projects without a dev or a treasury can actually do [22:29].
- Eco (@lordeco) made the case for Safe multisig wallets as a seed-phrase-free layer of protection, with an eye on quantum computing [49:41].
- Sniper Sunday itself still happened: Sho (@AgogoKaren) landed the first pirate hat to sell in five months [41:30], and the Quirkies coloring books arrived at her doorstep [1:08:56].
Highlights
[4:30] Four and a half years, unbroken. The Space started a few minutes late because "X decides that it wants to work sometimes and not work others," which gave Papii the opening for the night's thesis: Sniper Sunday is "the best streak in crypto." CoJo, meanwhile, spent the first minute convinced he was rugging again.
[5:35] "They're not back back." Papii's status report: he's still on Cloud9 that essentially everyone's assets are accounted for — safe, if not yet home. 284 in the recovered tranche, 161 returned, 123 to go, with holder DMs in progress.
[6:47] CoJo's tribute to Quit. He narrated the mental image of the white hat sitting up all night, pouring coffee, spending ~$7,500 of his own money, and signing off with "my kids are getting up in a half an hour." Verdict: "He's like Batman of the blockchain. We should send him the backwork." (Papii clarified that Spinatron sent a donation, but the back quirk remains un-sent.)
[8:21] The morning of. Papii woke at 7am for a routine phone check, saw chatter about Spike getting drained, opened the Quirkies OpenSea activity feed, and watched it tick like a money-counting machine — another 135 gone in front of him. He compared the feeling to watching the second plane hit on a classroom VHS-era TV in 2001.
[12:02] "This is not the time to think, brother." With the Australian dev asleep and Quit unable to reach the last 135, Papii screenshotted the transfer logs ten at a time — fourteen screenshots — and fed them to ChatGPT to build the ID list, praying it wouldn't pick that moment to get contemplative. In the middle of it, his cousin was blowing up his phone about football, which he noted with real affection: on Sundays the messages come every three seconds, mostly to tell him his team sucks [13:31].
[13:31] The batch of 200. The suspend function allowed 200 at a time — "if it was one by one, we were cooked" — and the first attempt errored out on gas. He topped up the treasury, retried, and got the two-second confirmation: 135 Quirkies suspended. "Dude, the world fell off my shoulder in that moment." He then canceled a day of calls and sat refreshing the activity log.
[17:35] The ten-minute margin. Ten minutes after the freeze, that same wallet started WETH-ing apes and pudgies. Papii's read: 130 Quirkies dumped into thin bids at 0.1–0.04 would have destroyed the floor and cascaded through the loans. "I really we saved probably really the at least the status of the project right now by like 10 minutes." That led into the hard question nobody has a clean answer to [18:58] — if you had a resting bid, went to sleep, and woke up holding a stolen NFT, should that problem become yours?
[22:36] Tim (Rare Apepes) taps in. Same exploit hit his 2022 collection on Friday — grails that had sat untouched for years, and no dev and no artist left on the team to respond. He gave Papii credit for the "foresight to kind of leap into act," then turned it into the practical conversation: what founders without capital or tooling can offer beyond morale. Papii walked him through upgradable contracts ("I don't think there's really a choice anymore" [29:09]), noted his dev quotes ~$3–4k against the $10–15k Tim was hearing, and the two agreed to take it offline with Unvault in the mix.
[41:30] Sho's pirate hat. Papii shouted out Sho for sniping the first pirate hat to sell in five months — a trait now floored around 2E, and one he likes because it doesn't crowd the rest of the face. Sho's answer reframed the night: "this is my home." She also revealed the acquisition process involved begging her husband, "so he relented," which set off the room's long-running quest to lure that man to an IRL event — COACH has apparently offered a Chewbacca costume as bait, more than once [43:03].
[44:23] The holdings audit. Papii tried to tally his OGs live: 48, then 46 after subtracting two he's holding for friends, then a recount landing on 64, then "I'm probably close to 70." Short-term goal: 100 before year-end. Actual goal: 500 and the number-one holder spot back, because "if nobody raises the bar, there's no more competition." COACH immediately raised it: "So I'm gonna have one billion." Also entertained and then wisely shelved: a troll QRC airdropped to the hacker, for which Molly already had art drawn. Papii's veto [49:06]: "I think we should not upset a hacker and become a target."
[49:41] Eco on Safe multisig. Self-described as "the boring guy" coming up to talk security, Eco laid out Safe (formerly Gnosis Safe) as a smart-contract wallet with no seed phrase, requiring two or three of your own wallets to sign — his hedge against both phishing and a future where fast machines can guess seed phrases. CoJo built on it with his own friction rule: no NFT activity on the phone at all, so FOMO has to survive the walk to the computer [55:03].
[1:00:20] "This was unheard of a couple years ago." CoJo's closing frame — once it was gone, it was gone. Papii thinks Quirkies may be the first project to actually use the tech to return stolen assets in this exploit, mostly because everyone else's were already WETH'd, which pulled the conversation into provenance-vs-upgrade tradeoffs and how Chimpers' claim migration has split its rarity [1:05:17].

Who said what
- Papii (@RealPapii) — host and the night's main narrator: the hack timeline, the freeze, the recovery plan, contract advice for other founders, and a live recount of his own OG stack.
- CoJo (@CoJ04) — cohost, opened the Space, kept the questions coming ("when did you start taking action?"), and delivered the Quit appreciation segment plus his own wallet-hygiene rules.
- Tim / Rare Apepes (@RareApepesNFT) — hit by the same exploit on Friday; brought the small-project perspective (no dev, no treasury) and traded notes on ERC-721C, Unvault, royalties, and dev pricing.
- Eco (@lordeco) — the security segment: Safe multisig as a no-seed-phrase vault, plus a quantum-computing heads-up; later weighed in on why legacy contracts left most projects defenseless.
- Sho (@AgogoKaren) — sniped the pirate hat, gave the night its warmest moment, and confirmed the coloring books have landed and are headed to her office for kids.
- COACH (@punkrockcoach) — resident chaos agent: one billion Quirkies, and an ongoing Chewbacca-based campaign to get Sho's husband to an IRL event.
- Quirkies (@quirkiesnft) — opened with the New Quork City anthem ("put your Q's up").
Worth a full listen
- [8:21]–[17:30] — Papii's full first-person account of the drain: waking up, watching the counter run, the ChatGPT list, the gas error, the confirmation message. The summary can't carry the pacing, and it's the most useful thing in the room for any founder.
- [22:36]–[39:40] — the founder-to-founder technical exchange with Tim: upgradable contracts, claim vs. airdrop, Unvault, what a migration actually costs, and the very relatable moment where Papii admits the deployer side of Etherscan looks like 20 buttons, one of which might turn COACH's quirkies into ponies.
- [41:30]–[49:34] — the Sniper Sunday segment proper, where the mood flips: a five-month-dormant trait finally trades, Sho says her piece, and Papii's holder count wobbles between 46 and 70 before he sets the target at 500.
